What NOT to Wear – At Your Bar Mitzvah

By Heritage House May 10, 2017

A Bar Mitzvah is a once-in-lifetime celebration for a young man, a time when all eyes will be on you as you make that important transition from boyhood to manhood. So, it’s understandable why you want to make sure to look your best. Unfortunately for many, this celebration also coincides with what can be the most awkward stage of the “growing pains” process. Bar Mitzvah SuitUnfortunately for many, this celebration also coincides with what can be the most awkward stage of the “growing pains” process. And to make matters worse, some of the top designers in men’s clothing have well-developed fashion lines for young boys and adult men, but nothing in between to fit a thirteen-year-old. So what is a young man to do to ensure he is dressed to impress?

Here are a few tips for what NOT to do, so that your big day doesn’t turn into a big flop:

1.) DON’T wait until the last minute

The old Boy Scouts adage applies here perfectly: Be prepared. There is so much to plan and get ready for your Bar Mitzvah, it can be tempting to wait until the last minute to go find your suit, especially if you’re worried your size might change between now and the day you’ll wear it. But putting off shopping is a mistake. Not only do you limit your options, you may find yourself stressed-out scrambling at the last minute and/or ultimately settling for something you’ll later regret. Shopping early gives you time to figure out what’s available, try a few looks so you’ll see what looks best on you, and have the chance for the suit to be tailored to fit you perfectly. And if you do end up sprouting a few inches before the big day, a tailored suit can easily be altered to your new size.

2.) DON’T be dependent on advice from relatives/friends

It can be helpful to go shopping with trusted friends and family members, people who’ve gone through the shopping process before and can offer an opinion on how you look in different suits. But make sure no one else is setting the terms for your Bar Mitzvah. After all, this is the time for you to step-up and be a man. Ultimately, what is most important is your comfort and the image you want to project. Which suit makes you feel like the strongest, most powerful, most truly a manly version of yourself. THAT will be the suit for you, no matter what anyone else says.

3.) DON’T just accept the first suit you see

Sometimes it happens: you see a suit and you just know right away that it is the one. But even if you’re lucky enough to find what you believe to be the right suit right away, it is always helpful to check out at least a few others, just to be sure. There are several classy options appropriate for a Bar Mitzvah nowadays, and the best way to ensure you will be satisfied for the long-term is to consider several before making your decision. Just because a suit looks good on a hanger or a certain fashion model doesn’t mean it will be the best option for you.

4.) DON’T fall for the latest trends

Flashy colors, patterns, materials, and cuts may be all the rage today. But don’t forget that the memories –and the photographs – from your Bar Mitzvah will last a lifetime. If you have a more stylish personality, you will probably want to choose a suit with a contemporary flair, but try to keep it within a timeless template. Your future self will thank you.

Now that you know what NOT to do, it’s time to start shopping for that suit that will be the perfect fit for your perfect Bar Mitzvah. Mazel Tov!
