WHAT SIZE
| Five simple things you might find helpful to remember about boy's suits culled from years of experience in the business. |

1. Buy a little big, not to point of being sloppy
or looking like the suit belongs to an older brother. Boys have a
bad habit of growing very quickly.
2. The fit of the jacket is most important. The fit of the pant is secondary.
Any knowledgeable tailor will be able to alter the pants much more easily than
the jacket. When a suit is altered leave as much material as possible. It extends
the life of the suit. As long as the suit has not been dry cleaned too many times
or abused better fabrics usually won't leave a noticeable line when the sleeves
or pants are lengthened.
3. The current style is for boys to wear their pants low, i.e. with a crotch
almost to the knees. You can argue and pull them up but turn your back and they
push them down with the pants dragging on the ground. Compromise.
4. A shirt is usually purchased 1 size smaller than the jacket. If the boy wears
a size 16 suit then the shirt is a size 14. Belts are 1 size larger than
the waist size. If the boy is a 28 waist than he usually a 30 belt. Dress
shoes are generally 1 size smaller than an athletic shoe.
5. Boys have their own sense of style. They have access to many influences: TV,
movies, the Internet. Sometimes it might be better to compromise then have something
hang in the closet. Current favorites are: 1) black 2) black 3) black 4) a little
navy or gray. |
